What made you want to include this issue in Josh’s dating app history? Compared to most rom-coms, it touches on the racism that Asian men face in dating apps and this kinda does hit at the issue of what a lot of Asian men have faced in a lot of dating apps in America. The new age these days with open-minded casting is important. The two writers didn’t have an ethnicity in mind, which is good. I’m not saying the two writers had a white person. Was Josh Lin specifically written with you in mind or was there someone else in the mix? Because of one character, all the surrounding cast has to be Asian, and to be able to do this with my peers and friends and people I respect like James are very special. The guy that plays my dad (James Saito), gets a job. The guy that plays my brother (Harry Shum Jr.), gets a job. Taking on a role like this, I know it’s not just me getting an opportunity. Josh is funny but also a leading man and a romantic guy. It’s a little different than the funny guys I’ve played before. As his first romantic leading role, Yang portrays the love interest of Nina Dobrev, whose character is catfished by him. Since his big break in the HBO comedy, Yang did a debut standup special Good Deal, appeared in Patriots Day, Fantasy Island, Space Force, and most recently, the Christmas-themed rom-com Love Hard. In 2014, he portrayed app developer Jian Yang in Silicon Valley after appearing in Two Broke Girls, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Although we are familiar with him as Bernard Tai in Crazy Rich Asians, Yang started out as a standup comedian when he was 21 years old and started acting shortly after.
